If you work a desk job full time, you probably spend most of your day peering down at a computer screen. This can be good for your career, but it’s not as beneficial for your spine. These positions can negatively impact your posture, leading to troublesome back and neck pain. Let’s take a look at the 5-point posture checklist from Preferred Family Chiropractic to avoid improper posture and pain while working at your computer.

1. Check Your Posture

Sitting with correct posture can go a long way towards reducing back and neck pain. Try to keep your feet flat on the ground and your legs uncrossed. Your spine should be flush with the back of your chair and you should not be slouching or hunching over your desk.

2. Position Your Screen

Your computer screen should be situated so that you can look at it straight ahead, rather than tilting your head up or down. Your head is quite heavy, which puts a lot of strain on your spine and neck. Proper positioning of your computer screen also reduces eye strain, which can help you avoid headaches.

3. Replace Your Equipment

Consider investing in ergonomic office equipment to enhance your workday. A quality chair and desk will make a huge difference. Your desk chair should properly support your spine and help you maintain the correct posture throughout the day.

4. Reduce Your Stress

Feeling stressed out can exacerbate muscle tension and stiffness, which will only make back or neck pain worse. Try to add stress-relieving activities to your day to reduce anxiety, such as meditation, yoga, or exercise.

5. Take Breaks

No matter how ergonomic your workstation is, it’s not a good idea to stay in the same position for eight hours straight. Take frequent breaks to stretch and walk around.
